The Descendants of Ambrose WEIPERT and Maria WIEDMAIER

Ninth Generation

14. George WEIPERT (Ambrose S. , Hilar , Antonius , Thadaeus , Michael , Hanss , Michael , Balthasar ) was born on 28 Mar 1851 in Buchanan Co., Missouri. He died on 12 Oct 1939 in Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington. He was buried on 16 Oct 1939 in Reardan, Lincoln Co., Washington, Reardan Cem.

BIOGRAPHY:  George was born and grew up in Buchanan county, Missouri near the town of Easton.  His father Ambrose emigrated from Germany around 1849 and his mother Maria emigrated with her father in 1844.  George was married to Mary in Missouri where some of his children were born. In the 1880 census in Buchanan coubnty, Missouri, George was listed as a 28 year old farmer, Mary was 26 and listed as housekeeper.
Sebastian was age 6, and Charles was age 4. George had L Baumond working for him on the farm.
In 1882, George moved his family to Washington state and settled probably at Waukon, Lincoln county where he was a farmer.  He became blind at some point and could no longer maintain his farm.  From stories told by his family, the damage to his eyes was a result of wheat chaff from harvesting.  His wife Mary died in 1897, so by 1900 he was living with his son Sebastian.  His two sons Frank and Charlie were also living with Sebastian.  His two daughters were sent to board elsewhere.  Olive lived with her Aunt Martha (Castle) Behr (or Bohr) in Andrew county, Missouri.  Her sister Emma was boarding in Lincoln county, Washington.  Family stories are that George lived mostly with Sebastian, but would visit his other children, even traveling to Los Angeles to visit with Olive.  He also would take the train to visit family in Missouri.

BIOGRAPHY: The 1900 Census shows Olive living in Monroe Twp, Andrew Co., Missouri with "her uncle Henry Bohr". He was the husband of her aunt Martha (Castle) Bahr (which is shown as Behr in the 1880 census). Her living there may be due to the fact that her mother Mary died a few years earlier and her father George (who was blind) may have felt that he was not able to take care of her.  In the same census, her sister Emma is a "lodger" in Lincoln Co., Washington, and her brothers Frank and Charles (along with George) are living with brother Sebastian.  When she was a little older, she and her two cousins Bessie May and Hazel Weipert went to San Francisco to live and work.  Later, she and Bessie moved to Los Angeles.
Olive worked for Westinghouse for many years there.  It has been said that with her attractive looks and outgoing personality, she could have been in the movies.  She went by the nickname Ollie. She never married. She had a long time friend "Jack" who was never able to obtain a divorce from his wife and marry Ollie.

He was living in Lincoln Co., Washington in 1900 where he had a homestead in an area known as "Rock Hill" where he planned to farm.  However, the area was not fit for farming, so he moved his family to Clarkston, Washington. He owned many horses and used them on construction projects such as road and bridge building. He helped build either the Monroe Street bridge or the Sunset highway bridge over Hangman Creek in Spokane, Washington.
*Most of this biographical information was provided by Norm and Mel Weipert in 1998.

Census: Idaho, Nez Perce Co., Bed Rock Pct., ED211S11L1, 09 May 1910.

MARRIAGE: He was supposedly married when he was 40 years old.  However, this would be 1896, which is four years after the birth of his son Clarence and one year after the birth of his daughter Bessie. For this to be true, these children would be from a previous marriage of his or Otie's, or they were married by the beginning of 1892.  According to the 1910 census, they had been married 20 years, so they actually were married about 1890 (when Otie was 14).
