She originally refused to date him because he was an All-American football player from Dartmouth. She had a policy against dating "jocks", but eventually relented and they were happily married for 50 years. They lived in the Los Altos Hills for 31 years before retiring to Sonoma in 1985.
  Traveling was their passion and they had seen most of the world, from the Great Wall of China to the Tazmanian devils. They also enjoyed spending summers with their family at their house in Lake Tahoe, which they did traditionally for decades. Don predeceased her in 1995.
 Rosemary dedicated her life to her family. She raised four children: Lynda Waters, Prunedale; Kathy Milbrant, Santa Rosa; Donald Alvarez, Hollister; and Robert Alvarez, Petaluma. He was a Muncie Central High School graduate and attended Ball State University. Don retired in 1997 from Kirk’s Bike Shop, his family owned business since 1865. In the earlier years he was responsible for bicycle and toy sales which brought great joy to many youngsters at Christmastime. His work ethic and mechanical skills were to perfection; he was a great salesman. He proudly and honorable served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
Don was a member of the Hazelwood Christian Church where he helped maintain a small garden and helped with painting. He volunteered at the Christian Ministries’ food pantry. He was a kind Christian man with a servant’s heart. He knew how to fix everything. He was always giving and helping in whatever ways he could find. He was a carpenter/draftsman. He designed and built his home in 1948 and in 1951 a home for his parents as well. He was an avid bicyclist. He loved fishing, swimming, and woodworking. Don was a Pacer’s fan. He and his wife enjoyed watching the games together. He enjoyed vacationing in Florida and with his family in Hawaii.
Don is survived by his wife of 10 years, Franella “Fran” (Kidney) Kirk; four children, Steve Kirk (wife-Marcia), Honolulu, HI, Brian Kirk (wife-Pam), Muncie, John Kirk (wife-Jane), Evansville and Carolyn Graham , Indianapolis; three step daughters; Rachel Syska (husband-Mark), Dowington, Pennsylvania, Deborah Dobecki (husband-Kevin), South Bend and Mary Russ-Troup (husband-Todd), nineteen grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
 In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Jean (Kirshman) Kirk; his second wife, Betty (Dupont) Kirk; two brothers, Jack and Gene Kirk; a brother-in-law, Buddy Kirshman.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016, 1:00 p.m. at the Hazelwood Christian Church 1400 W. University , Muncie, IN 47303 with Pastor Jason Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Elm Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Delaware County Honor Guard.
Friends may call at the Hazelwood Christian Church on Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. until service time.
