The Descendants of John CASTLE and Ann Maria DARNER

Third Generation

4. Thomas D. CASTLE ([Unknown] , John ) was born 1 in 1825 in Virginia. He died on 16 Mar 1856 in Andrew Co., Missouri.

BIRTH: Census: Ohio, Clark Co., Moorefield Twp, p. 254 l. 19, 27 August 1850 (living with John Castle, siblings).

MARRIAGE: IGI Ohio, #P0644 (Castle).

BIOGRAPHY: Thomas was born in Virginia or West Virginia about 1825, possibly in the area of Harpers Ferry. His family moved to a farm in Clark County, Ohio about 1839 (see the birth places of his aunt Melinda's children). The 1850 census shows him living on this farm with what must be (due to the age differences) his grandparents John and A. M. Castle. Their farm was next to that of Peter Sager, whose daughter Lydia he married. Thomas, Lydia, their two daughters Eliza and Mary, and the family of Thomas' sister Rebecca (Castle) Montgomery moved to Buchanan County, Missouri about 1854 or 1855. His brother, William, was also in Missouri by the 1860 census.

DEATH: Thomas died in 1856, soon after the birth of daughter Martha. The following was written in a note by, I believe, Frank William Weipert, with title "What I Know About Grand Mother" (referring to Lydia (Sager) Castle): "It seems I remember hearing Aunt Martha tell they hadn't been in Missouri very long till she was born and there her Father died when she was 16 days old with Consumption they called it in those days."

WILL: Thomas' executor was John D. Castle, who applied to the probate court on 6 May 1856:
"John D. Castle appears and applies for Letter of Executorship on the Estate of Thomas D. Castle dec'd which was granted to him under the will of Said dec'd. Whereupon the Executor Bond to the State of Missouri in the sum of $2500.00 dollars with Allen Crook and James Montgomery as his surety which is approved by the Court and filed, orders that Said Estate pay the cost herein Expended. D. VanBuskirk Probate Judge"
Thomas' Will was filed with the court 6 May 1856:
"Last Will of Thomas D. Castle. In the name of God Amen: I, Thomas D. Castle of the County of Andrew and State of Missouri, of sound and disposing mind, and in my usual health, although weak in body, and not long expecting to live, desirous of disposing of the estate with which God has blest me, according to my will, do hereby declare and publish this as my last will and testament.
In the first, I resign my body to the dust and my soul to God, and my wishes is that after my death, my body shall be buried in a decent, Christian like manner.
I dispose of my worldly goods as follows: My just debts are to be paid first out of my personal estate; I give and bequeath to my wife, Lida Castle all of my estate, real and personal, so long as She remains my widow, or during her natural life, and then revert to my said Children, viz: Eliza Jane, Mary Elizabeth, and Martha, my said three daughters forever.
I nominate and appoint John D. Castle as the executor of this my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 8th day of March A.D. 1856.  Thomas D. Castle  X his mark
Declared and published by Thomas D. Castle as his last will in presence of: James Montgomery, William Castle
  State of Missouri
  County of Andrew
Be it remembered that on this the sixth day of May A.D. 1856 personally appeared before me, the Probate Judge of Andrew County, James Montgomery and William Castle who being duly sworn by me, upon their oaths say that they were present at the time that Thomas D. Castle declared, signed and sealed the will aforesaid as and for his last will and testament, that he did direct and request John D. Castle to write his name thereto, he not knowing how to write his own name, he then made his mark thereto it being his manner of Executing all instruments of writing and at the Execution thereof he was of sound mind and disposing memory, and over the age of twenty one years that said testator called upon them, the said witnesses to witness the said will which they did by subscribing their names thereto in the presence of said testator, and in the presence of each other and further they say not.
   James Montgomery
   William Castle
Subscribed and sworn to before me this 6th day of May A.D. 1856.  Daniel VanBuskirk Probate Judge.
Which is deemed sufficient to establish said will and the same is admitted to probate accordingly.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my official seal at office in Savannah Mo. on this the 6th day of May A.D. 1856.
Daniel VanBuskirk Probate Judge of Andrew County Mo."

DEATH: Note written by Frank Weipert (see Lydia Sager notes for text).

Thomas married Lydia SAGER, daughter of Peter SAGER Sr. and Magdalene FOLTZ (Voltz), on 30 Oct 1851 in Moorefield, Clark Co., Ohio. Lydia was born on 16 Jan 1831 in Virginia. She died on 10 Jan 1916. She was buried in Monroe Twp., Andrew Co., Missouri, Bethel Baptist Cem.

BIOGRAPHY: Lydia Sager was born in Virginia or West Virginia in 1831. Her family moved to the Clark/Champaign county area of Ohio probably before 1840. She married Thomas Castle, who lived on a nearby farm in Moorefield Township. They moved to Buchanan Co., Missouri in about 1854 or 1855 where Thomas died soon afterward (see "a" below). She remarried that same year to William Lafon. By 1880, they had moved to Andrew Co., Missouri. She lived with son U. S. Grant after William's death, as seen in the 1910 census.
(a) The following was written in a note entitled "What I Know About Grand Mother" by, I believe, Frank William Weipert:
"I am not positive but if I remember right she was born and married the first time in Ohio.  And I also am not positive but runs in my mind that my mother and Aunt Mary was born in Ohio.  It seems I remember hearing Aunt Martha tell they hadn't been in Missouri very long till she was born and there her Father died when she was 16 days old with Consumption they called it in those days.
Grand Mother's maiden name was Lydia Sager born Jan. 16th 1831, was married Sept. 25th 1856, died Jan. 10th 1916.  Her first marriage was to Thomas Castle.  Her second to William Lafan who passed on very suddenly eating his dinner on Feb. 6th 1909.
Eliza Jane Castle, my mother, born August 11th 1852.  (I think here a mistake).  Mary E. Castle born Jan. 26 1854.  Martha E. Castle born March 1 1856.  To the best of my knowledge from some papers down along some of Aunt Martha's things."
The mistake he refers to is that Eliza Jane is not his mother, Mary Elizabeth is. Also, note that the dates of birth of the three Castle sisters precede the stated year of Lydia's marriage! He has underlined the years 1856 and 1852.  However, the 1856 "marriage" is 16 days beyond the birth of Martha, which is when he said Thomas Castle died. Records from Ohio show that Lydia and Thomas were married on October 30th, 1851.

BIRTH: Note written by Frank Weipert. Birth also shown on gravestone. The date of 16 January 1831 was received in December 1993 from Susan (Sager) Moore.

MARRIAGE: Lydia first married Thomas Castle, with whom she had three daughters. She remarried to William Lafon with whom she had about six more children.

MARRIAGE: Information from IGI Ohio, Sager and Castle.
There is a marriage record in Probate Court, Springfield, Clark County, OH, Book 3, Page 290 for a Lydia Sager to Thomas D. Castle on 30 Oct 1851 by Samuel Betchtel, Justice of the Peace.
Her father's will names a daughter Lydia LAFON. A page of research in the Clark County, Ohio Historical Museum by a Mrs. Skardon, now deceased, lists the abstract of Peter Sager's will. Mrs. Skardon, who lived at 5632 Upper Valley Pike just north of Tremont City, wrote Lydia's last name as LAPHON.

CHILDREN: Census: 1860 Missouri, Buchanan Co., Marion Twp, P265 L26, 29 October 1860 (Lafoon).
Census: 1870 Missouri, Buchanan Co., Marion Twp, p. 29 l. 14, 28 June 1870 (Lafan).
Census: 1880 Missouri, Andrew Co., Monroe, V1ED48S15 (Lafins).
Census: 1910 Missouri, Andrew Co., Monroe Twp. - 4 May 1910, ED9 S11A L23 (Lafon) states she had 10 children, 4 living.

DEATH: Note written by Frank Weipert. Also, death date from gravestone.

BURIAL: Find A Grave Memorial# 11541812, shows gravestone image inscription, "Lafon, Lydia Sager his wife, Jan 16, 1831 - Jan 10, 1916", buried with husband William Lafon.

The battle leading to his death is recorded in an article titled "Skirmish at Waugh's Farm" in the "Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture"
by George E. Lankford (http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net):
"The most disastrous Union loss in the Batesville area was at the farm of Virginia Lewis Waugh, twelve mile west of town. On February 18, 1864, a foraging train of thirty-five wagons, escorted by 100 soldiers of the Eleventh Missouri Cavalry and Fourth Arkansas Mounted Infantry under command of Captain William Castle, stopped and camped for the night on Waugh's farm. A local account says that a girl on a neighboring farm slipped away across the White River to the west and revealed the train’s presence to people who would locate Captain George Rutherford and his First Arkansas Cavalry, which consisted mostly of county men.
The next morning, Rutherford's cavalry attacked the train, killing four, wounding ten and capturing thirty-two. Only one Confederate casualty is known, John Minnikin of Batesville. Most of the wagons were burned and the contents and horses seized. Stolen gear was later recovered from various locations in the area, such as Sylamore and Cross-Roads.
The Union and Confederate leaders later disputed, without results, whether the shooting of Capt. Castle was an atrocity or a battle incident but Capt. Rutherford recovered Castle's watch and pencil case from his men. He returned them to Col. Livingston, with kind words for Castle and a request that Livingston try to save a recently captured brother James Rutherford for a prisoner exchange. Livingston appears to have blamed for being surprised, for he reports that the captain 'paid the penalty for his neglect with his life.'"
